This program addresses the special demands and pressures placed on these professionals – which can cause stress, burnout, depression, and the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Because many healthcare providers have easy access to controlled substances, they face triggers and temptations that few people in other professions encounter.

The goal of the Healthcare Professionals Program is to help each patient recover, as well as to address any licensing issues and facilitate the patient’s return to professional practice.

We’ve provided treatment to doctors, nurses and other health professionals from more than 40 states across the country. We conduct more than 400 assessments for health professionals annually.

Upon admission, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary four-day evaluation begins. This period includes medically supervised detoxification, if needed, as well as an introduction to the treatment process.

Treatment Components

Healthcare professionals who have deep empathy for and understanding of what healthcare work entails developed the treatment program, which includes:

  • A thorough assessment with these components:

    • Medical and substance use history
    • Mental health/psychiatric conditions
    • Lab studies with comprehensive toxicology screenings
    • Psychometric testing and, if indicated, neurocognitive assessments
    • Family assessments
  • Detox services, if needed, at Caron’s onsite, state-of-the art medical building, which is staffed by a full-time medical team
  • An innovative phase system with a clinically driven variable length of stay, allowing additional time for patients to participate in specialized programming to address underlying issues that may hinder recovery
  • Treatment of complex issues including dual diagnosis, addiction interaction disorder (AID), process addictions, trauma, and issues unique to the LGBTQ community
  • One-on-one meetings with the addiction medicine team, which includes seven doctoral-level professionals
  • Coordination with a patient’s referent and, with the patient’s permission, colleagues and state advocacy programs to gather necessary information, provide updates during treatment, and plan for the patient’s return to work
  • Treatment modalities that utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive processing therapy, as well as schema and 4th Step group work
  • Specialized group therapy sessions that address:

    • Licensure and work issues
    • The difficulty medical professionals have in seeking and accepting direction from others
    • Integration back into professional practice
  • A Caduceus Group to deal with professional persona, ease of access to drugs, and the impact addiction has on medical practice and patient care
  • An Enneagram Group to help create self-awareness and recognize patterns of behavior
  • On-site programming for patients with chronic pain may include these treatments, based on individual needs: acupuncture, medical massage therapy, a weekly chronic pain group, yoga, hydrotherapy, and physical therapy
  • Family programming that invites all members to participate in the healing process
  • Access to the full range of Caron’s on-site wellness amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, wellness programs, and personal trainers
  • Access to on-staff registered dietitians who provide medical nutrition therapy/ education, information, and guidance about well-balanced eating, and oversight of culinary staff to ensure that meal options in Caron’s dining facilities are nutritious as well as appealing
  • Individualized continuing care plans that may include professional monitoring programs when appropriate and with patient consent

As clinically indicated, patients may also participate in the two-day Healthcare Professionals Intensive Experiential Program facilitated by Breakthrough at Caron staff. This intensive program focuses on self-awareness, self-acceptance of emotions related to families of origin and other formative relationships, introduction to mindfulness, and sensory motor awareness of emotions.

Typically five days in length, the assessment includes:

  • Detoxification services, if needed
  • Psychological/psychiatric evaluation
  • Medical history and physical evaluation
  • Review of comprehensive collateral information
  • Lab studies, including comprehensive toxicology screenings
  • Family assessments
  • Psychometric testing and, if indicated, neurocognitive assessment

    • Patients undergoing an assessment benefit from being able to participate in treatment and community activities and begin to build relationships with their peers within the healthcare professionals program.

    When the assessment is complete, the patient and their family meet with the treatment team to review the findings and confirm if a substance use disorder does or does not exist. The team will make recommendations appropriate to the findings. In cases where substance use disorder or mental health conditions are indicated, the team works with the patient and family to develop a behavioral health treatment plan.
