Marijuana Anonymous (MA)

Founded in 1989, Marijuana Anonymous (MA) is an organization of people with the common problem of marijuana addiction. They also have a common solution that helps them to stop using marijuana and turn their lives around. That solution is the Twelve Steps of Marijuana Anonymous (MA), which was adapted from the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

The organization uses the Twelve Traditions of Marijuana Anonymous (MA), also adapted from the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), as a guide to operate as an organization. The only requirement for membership in Marijuana Anonymous (MA) is that each member wants to stop using marijuana in all forms.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) is not associated with any other organization, including religious, professional, or governmental groups. Marijuana Anonymous (MA) also does not have views on outside entities or disputes. The main purpose of Marijuana Anonymous (MA) is to help those afflicted with marijuana addiction to stop using marijuana in all forms, and to turn the individual Marijuana Anonymous (MA) members’ lives around.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Overview

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) has three main parts which make up the foundation of the Marijuana Anonymous program. They are Recovery, Unity, and Service.

Recovery is taking the 12 Steps of Marijuana Anonymous with a step guide or “sponsor”, in order to heal our damaged spirits, rebuild our lives, and remove the obsession to use marijuana. Taking the 12 Steps involves reading Marijuana Anonymous literature, writing, praying, meditating, making restitution to people we have harmed in our past, doing service work, and attending Marijuana Anonymous (MA) meetings, among others.

Unity is getting involved with the people, the group, and the fellowship of Marijuana Anonymous. It means arriving at Marijuana Anonymous (MA) meetings early and talking to people. Attending the meetings and going out with people from the meetings after the meetings. Attending MA activities like retreats, conferences, roundups, speaker meetings, sober parties, sober athletic and music events and more. Unity is also participating with other MA members in activities outside of Marijuana Anonymous, talking to other members in-between meetings, providing support to other members, and more.

Service in Marijuana Anonymous (MA) begins early in recovery, with new members helping set-up chairs, make coffee, greet other members, and clean up after meetings. As new members get more clean time, they begin taking on service positions with more responsibility. This may include being meeting treasurer, meeting secretary, other meeting level service positions, “sponsoring” or mentoring other new members, and bringing meetings and literature into Hospitals & Institutions where marijuana addicts can’t get to outside meetings. This type of General Service begins at the meeting level, carries into the local areas, through the “district” level, all the way to national and the international level at Marijuana Anonymous World Services.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Tools

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) uses a variety of tools to help members recover including Abstinence, MA Meetings, MA Literature, MA Sponsor, MA Steps, MA Fellowship, MA Events, and MA Service among others.

Abstinence: Marijuana Anonymous (MA) members commit themselves to abstain from using marijuana in all forms, one day at a time.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Meetings: Marijuana Anonymous (MA) members attend Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Meetings to learn how the MA program works, to gain strength by hearing other MA members experience, strength and hope, to find support through the MA Fellowship, to obtain MA Literature, to get introduced to the MA Steps, to find a suitable MA Sponsor, to find out about MA Events and to get involved in MA Service.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Literature: Marijuana Anonymous (MA) literature includes the primary Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Book, Life With Hope; Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Pamphlets; the Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Daily Reflections Book “Living Every Day With Hope”; The MA Information Pack; The MA New Meeting Starter Kit, Marijuana Anonymous (MA) group readings, including the 12 Steps, the 12 Traditions, the 12 Questions, For Loved Ones and more.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Sponsor: A Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Sponsor is a member of Marijuana Anonymous (MA) who has made some progress in the Marijuana Anonymous (MA) recovery program, has taken or is taking the steps of Marijuana Anonymous (MA), and would like to help another marijuana addict attempting to attain or maintain sobriety, navigate the Marijuana Anonymous (MA) steps, learn more about the Marijuana Anonymous (MA) fellowship and the Marijuana Anonymous (MA) program.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Fellowship – The Fellowship of Marijuana Anonymous (MA) is just as important as recovery or service. The fellowship is about being part of the community, which is vital for many of us after being isolated and alone for so long. Fellowship is about connecting with each other, holding each other up, and holding each other accountable.

The fellowship benefits our psychological, spiritual, and bodily health. It brings us a reason for living once again, oftentimes after years of being purposeless. Fellowship helps to boost our self-respect, self-esteem, and confidence, while reducing our anxiety and increasing our level of contentment.

Fellowship includes attending meetings, going out with people after the meetings, attending MA retreats, conferences, roundups, speaker meetings, sober parties, and a variety of sober activities including athletics, music, art and other MA events.

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Events: Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Events include MA speaker meetings, MA workshops, MA retreats, MA conferences, MA roundups, sober cruises, sober vacations and other events and festivals with safe, sober groups..

Marijuana Anonymous (MA) Service: As mentioned above, service in Marijuana Anonymous (MA) begins early in recovery and includes MA General Service, MA H&I Service, Meeting Level Service, District and Region Level Service. Members follow the guidelines outlined in The Twelve Concepts for MA Service and the MA Service Manual. There is also an Annual MA Service Conference that members attend to get information on MA service globally.
