OA Service

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a community of people who support each other in order to recover from compulsive eating and food behaviors. OA is based on the 12 Steps, 12 Traditions and 12 Concepts of Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 Steps are the foundation for personal recovery and the 12 Traditions help OA groups sustain their unity and fellowship. The Twelve Concepts of Service in Overeaters Anonymous provide guidance for service in the OA fellowship and for spreading OA’s message world-wide. The Twelve Concepts of OA Service illustrate how OA members can apply the principles of the OA program to the working relationships within OA’s service structure. OA Service Structure

Overeaters Anonymous service is structured in an inverted pyramid similar to that of Alcoholics Anonymous featuring various levels of service. The first level is the group level, which occupies the broad base at the top of the pyramid. The next level represents service at the intergroup and national service board levels. Then comes the regional level, with 11 regions making up the entire world. The World Service Office works to provide quality support and services to the OA Fellowship.

Representatives, delegates, trustees, and committee members at all levels of Narcotics Anonymous service are the trusted servants of the OA fellowship. They do not govern and have no authority. Each individual serves at the direction of the fellowships membership, with only a loving God as the ultimate authority. It is vital to the unity of OA that information and service effort flow smoothly between the three levels of the Overeaters Anonymous service structure.

New members are encouraged to get involved in service at the group level of Overeaters Anonymous. Once you have established your foundation at the group level, we encourage you to branch to the next level of service at the Intergroup level, before moving on to the Service Board or Regional levels of Overeaters Anonymous service. Ways you can get involved at the local group level include.

  • Bring a friend to a meeting
  • Set-up and break down the meeting
  • Speak at a meeting, share your experience, strength and hope.
  • Welcome newcomers, give them your phone number
  • Say yes to service and grow in OA.
  • Be Secretary or Chairperson of a Group/Meeting
  • Be a Sponsor in OA
  • Volunteer in the Intergroup Office
  • Answer phones to be there for a struggling addict and/or their loved ones

Feel free to download the Overeaters Anonymous Handbook for more information on being of service in OA.
