Spiritual Topic Meeting Format
At its core, this format is a random topic/ticket share format. Tickets with numbers are handed out before the meeting starts. These numbers are drawn to select the next person to share. That person is given a random subject to share upon or they may share upon whatever recovery related topic they wish. The format below is affectionately known as the “Spiritual Salad Spinner” because the topics are pulled from a salad spinner. They can also be drawn from a bowl. Another variation is called the “God Stick” meeting. In this version the spiritual topics are written on popsicle sticks or tongue depressors and drawn from a container in the same fashion. Either way, these types of meetings are useful for keeping the spiritual solution at the forefront.
“Welcome to the _________________meeting of Crystal Meth Anonymous. My name is __________, and I am a crystal meth addict.”
“Let’s open the meeting with a moment of silence for the crystal meth addict who is still suffering, followed by the Serenity Prayer.”
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage
to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
“I have shared that I am a crystal meth addict; are there any other crystal meth addicts present?” (Wait for a show of hands)
“Welcome! If you are seeking recovery, you are in the right place. Recovery from addiction to crystal meth is possible.”
“Crystal Meth Anonymous is a fellowship of people for whom all drugs, especially crystal meth, have become a problem. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stay clean and lead a sober life. The fellowship advocates complete abstinence from crystal meth, alcohol, medications not taken as prescribed as well as all other mind-altering substances. There are no dues or membership lists – each group is expected to be self-supporting through its own contributions. The Twelve Steps of CMA are suggested to provide us with a plan with which to build a sober, better life. We believe that if we work these simple steps we will live a life free of active crystal meth addiction.”
“The format of this meeting is:”
- Selected readings
- Our clean time count-up
- The Salad is served: We will pick a number from the tickets that were given out before the meeting began. We spin the spiritual salad and the person whose number was called will get a topic from the spinner, (a spiritual principle or spiritual challenge)…it is then that person’s time to share on the topic.
- The 7th Tradition and announcements
- Celebration of recovery milestones, and
- Closing
“The readings used at this meeting are adapted from the writings of Crystal Meth Anonymous and the text, “Alcoholics Anonymous.”
“I have asked __________ to read “The Twelve Steps of CMA.” (or “The Twelve Steps and How They Work”)
I have asked __________ to read ____________________________.
I have asked __________ to read ____________________________.
[Possible readings include, “What is the Crystal Meth Program”, “Are You a Tweaker”, “Today I Can” and “I Can Stay Sober”]
“In CMA, the most important person at any meeting is the newcomer. Would those in their first 30 days of clean time please raise your hands and introduce yourselves by your first name only. This is not done to embarrass you but so that we may get to know you better.”
“Do we have any visitors or anyone at this meeting for the first time who would like to introduce themselves by their first name only?”
“To show that the program works, would those who have reached 30-60 days of recovery please raise your hands?”
60 to 90 days…?
90 days to 6 months…?
6 to 9 months…?
9 months to 1 year of clean time…?
1 to 2 years…?
2 to 5 years…?
5 to 10 years…?
10 years and over…?
“For those who are new, please don’t hesitate to contact members who have been around a while, for they will be delighted to share their experience, strength, and hope with you.”
“The meeting is now open for participation. We suggest that you have 24 hours of clean time to share and ask that you limit your share to a maximum of 3 minutes so that we can get to as many people as possible. Our Spiritual Timekeeper will help keep you on track.”
“When sharing, we need to be careful in describing drug effects, as some of us may be triggered and the desire to use may be heightened. Please honour the recovery of others and avoid glorifying drugs and/or drug-driven sex. We realize that this is part of many of our stories and needs discussion; however, the Secretary may interrupt and refocus if this gets out of hand.”
“So it works like this:
- We’ll call a number. If it is your number, you will be given the spinner from which to choose a topic.
- You will use that as your personal topic or just share where you’re at today,
- You may ask for another topic or even pass.”
(At _:_ _ the leader reads)
“Before we close, does anyone have a burning desire to share? That’s when you feel you may go out and use, or harm yourself or someone else today if you don’t get an opportunity to speak.”
“Now __________, our Treasurer, will tell us about the 7th Tradition.
While the basket is passed, I’ve asked __________ to read the Twelve Traditions of CMA.”
“This group holds a business meeting (insert when). The participation of all group members is encouraged.”
“Are there any CMA-related announcements?”
“May we have a sponsorship announcement?”
“May we have a phone list announcement?”
“May we have an announcement from our GSR?”
“This meeting is pleased to celebrate recovery milestones by giving chips (and birthday cakes - optional) for sobriety milestones. Will the chip (and cake – optional) person please come up.”
(After Milestone celebrations)
“I want to thank everyone who participated in our meeting this evening. Please come back next week and bring a friend.”
“I have asked ____________ to read _________________ and lead us out in the Serenity Prayer.”
