Debtors Anonymous (DA)
Founded in 1971, Debtors Anonymous (DA) is is a twelve-step program for people who want to stop incurring unsecured debt. They welcome everyone who feels they have a problem incurring unsecured debt. Debtors Anonymous provides hope and solutions to people whose use of unsecured debt causes difficulty in their lives and the lives of their friends and loved ones.
Debtors Anonymous uses the Twelve Steps of Debtors Anonymous (DA), which was adapted from the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), to help those suffering recover. They also use the Twelve Traditions of Debtors Anonymous (DA), also adapted from the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), as a guide to operate as an organization. The only requirement for membership in Debtors Anonymous (DA) is the desire to stop incurring unsecured debt.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) is not associated with any other organization, including religious, professional, or governmental groups. Debtors Anonymous (DA) also does not have views on outside entities or disputes. The main purpose of Debtors Anonymous (DA) is to support each other to stop incurring unsecured debt, and to turn the individual Debtors Anonymous (OA) members’ lives around.

Debtors Anonymous (DA) Overview
Debtors Anonymous (DA) has three main parts which make up the foundation of the Debtors Anonymous (DA) program. They are Recovery, Unity, and Service.
Recovery is taking the 12 Steps of Debtors Anonymous (DA) with a step guide or “sponsor”, in order to heal our damaged spirits, rebuild our lives, and recover from compulsive spending and use of unsecured debt. Taking the 12 Steps involves reading Debtors Anonymous (DA) literature, writing, praying, meditating, making restitution to people we have harmed in our past, doing service work, and attending Debtors Anonymous (DA) meetings, among others.
Unity is getting involved with the people, the group, and the fellowship of Debtors Anonymous (DA). It means arriving at Debtors Anonymous (DA) meetings early and talking to people. Attending the meetings and going out with people from the meetings after the meetings. Attending DA activities like DA retreats, DA conferences, DA roundups, DA speaker meetings, DA parties, DA athletic, music events and more. Unity is also participating with other DA members in activities outside of Debtors Anonymous (DA), talking to other members in-between meetings, providing support to other members, and more.
Service in Debtors Anonymous (DA) begins early in recovery, with new members helping set-up chairs, make coffee, greet other members, and clean up after meetings. As new members get more recovery time, they begin taking on service positions with more responsibility. This may include being meeting treasurer, meeting secretary, other meeting level service positions, “sponsoring” or mentoring other new members, and bringing meetings and literature into Hospitals & Institutions where problem debtors can’t get to outside meetings. This type of General Service begins at the meeting level, carries into the local areas, through the “district” level, all the way to national level.

Debtors Anonymous (DA) Meetings: Debtors Anonymous (DA) members attend Debtors Anonymous (DA) Meetings to learn how the DA program works, to gain strength by hearing other DA members experience, strength and hope, to find support through the DA Fellowship, to obtain DA Literature, to get introduced to the DA Steps, to find a suitable DA Sponsor, to find out about DA Events and to get involved in DA Service.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) Literature: Debtors Anonymous (DA) Literature includes Debtors Anonymous (DA) Books, Debtors Anonymous (DA) Pamphlets; Debtors Anonymous (DA) Digital Downloads and Audio Recordings, DA Coins, DA group readings and more.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) Sponsor: A Debtors Anonymous (DA) Sponsor is a member of Debtors Anonymous (DA) who has made some progress in the Debtors Anonymous (DA) recovery program, has taken or is taking the steps of Debtors Anonymous (DA), and would like to help other members navigate the Debtors Anonymous (DA) steps, learn more about the Debtors Anonymous (DA) fellowship and the Debtors Anonymous (DA) program.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) Fellowship – The Fellowship of Debtors Anonymous (DA) is just as important as recovery or service. The fellowship is about being part of the community, which is vital for many of us after being isolated and alone for so long. Fellowship is about connecting with each other, holding each other up, and holding each other accountable.
The fellowship benefits our psychological, spiritual, and bodily health. It brings us a reason for living once again, oftentimes after years of being purposeless. Fellowship helps to boost our self-respect, self-esteem, and confidence, while reducing our anxiety and increasing our level of contentment.
Fellowship includes attending DA meetings, going out with people after the meetings, attending DA retreats, DA conferences, DA roundups, DA speaker meetings, DA parties, and a variety of other DA activities including athletics, music, art and other DA events.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) Events: Debtors Anonymous (DA) Events include DA speaker meetings, DA workshops, DA retreats, DA conferences, DA roundups, DA cruises, DA vacations and other DA events.
Debtors Anonymous (DA) Service: As mentioned above, Debtors Anonymous Service begins early in recovery and includes DA General Service, Meeting Level Service, District and Region Level Service. Members follow the guidelines outlined by both the Regional Service Offices and Intergroups. There are also local Debtors Anonymous service meetings that members attend to get information on DA Service.
