Life Process
The Life Process Program is a commercial alternative to Alcoholics Anonimous and other 12 step addiction recovery programs. The Life Process Program believes that you are the primary agent of change. It does not ‘fix you’ but is an aid to help you recover from addiction, to allow you to mature out from your addiction more quickly, more surely, and more completely by examining your life from the perspectives presented here and following the self-help guidelines provided.
Life Process Program is not an addiction treatment program, but a coaching program that helps you (and all of our participants) deal with life head-on, with purpose, meaning, and joy — so you may become the true, mature person you are meant to be. And, you will do this on your own terms. The Life Process Program can be used to address many forms of addiction, such as alcohol, drugs, food, pornography, sex, gambling, love and relationships, and social media addiction.
History of Life Process
Developed by Dr. Stanton Peele, the world leading authority on non-12 step addiction recovery. He began his critique of standard notions of addiction when he published Love and Addiction (coauthored with Archie Brodsky). According to Peele's experiential/environmental approach, addictions are negative patterns of behavior that result from an over-attachment people form to experiences generated from a range of involvements. He contends that most people experience addiction to some degree at least for periods of time during their lives. He does not view addictions as medical problems but as "problems of life" that most people overcome. The failure to do so is the exception rather than the rule, he argues.
In The Truth About Addiction and Recovery (1991) and 7 Tools to Beat Addiction (2004) Peele laid out what he believes to be the elements of alternative treatment. He developed these ideas as the Life Process Program, which was the basis for a non-12 Step residential treatment program and is now offered as an online treatment resource by Dr. Peele and colleagues.
How Life Process Works
During the Life Process Program you will be given the opportunity to read and learn more about addictive behaviours, watch videos from renowned addiction expert Dr Stanton Peele and apply those readings and the principles behind them to your own situation.
You will spend time setting goals for living an addiction free life and you will develop the skills and tools necessary to accomplish those goals. Most importantly, you will do all of these things while going about your day to day life.
The Life Process program is built on a set of ten beliefs proposed by Dr. Peele which he calls “The Guiding Principles”.
- Recognize that addiction isn’t a lifetime disease.
- Develop the skills needed to gain life rewards.
- Resolve emotional problems and become less anxious, depressed, and afraid.
- Don’t lose sight of — in fact, build on — your existing strengths.
- Develop further skills and life assets — such as forming a family, finding satisfying work, gaining life security and the respect of others, and so on. These are attributes you won’t readily give up once you achieve them.
- Become engaged in relationships of all kinds, from friendships to deeper intimacies, and become part of a larger community.
- Look for positive options in life — this includes having fun, seeking manageable adventure, and finding deeper meaning.
- Mature beyond looking at the world strictly in terms of your own needs to accept obligations to others and the satisfaction this entails.
- Gain and relish being in control of your life — what we call a sense of personal agency — so that you are optimistic that you can get what you need in the world.
- Affirm — keep front and center — what you value and your purpose in life so as to eliminate addiction from your life.
These are considered natural “life processes.”.
Maturity means having a secure adult identity — one that causes a person to see themselves as a capable, potent, contributing member of society with responsibilities toward loved ones and others. Achieving this state is the best protection against addiction.
In this sense, the Life Process Program is not an addiction treatment program. It is a coaching program that helps its participants deal with life head-on, with purpose, meaning, and joy — so they may become the true, mature person they are meant to be.
The Life Process Program helps to build:
- Values & Purpose - which it helps you discover
- Motivation - which it helps you generate
- Life Skills - which it teaches how to acquire
- Community & Relationships - which it fine tunes with you
The answer to addiction is leading a happy, fulfilling life that makes addiction unnecessary.
